WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

Freebandy is a new sport that has emerged from various forms of innebandy freestyle and that draws from several traditional disciplines. Although freebandy was officially born in Sweden, Czech representatives were present at all key phases of its development, could take part in its creation, and belong to the most advanced players.

One can play freebandy in many ways. So far, there are no written rules. The players decide about the progress of the game. There are no goalies, and mostly there are no referees. The objective of the game is that one team strives to drive the ball into the target of the other team, either on the surface or in the air depending on circumstances. The target can also take various forms: it can be a basket, board with one or more holes in it, or a defined area. One can play anywhere: in a gym, on the street, on grass, or a beach.

Players use special sticks: Shinai, Bokken, or Wajizashi. The blade has an opening at the end to grasp the ball. The basic tricks on spot are surprisingly easy to do. However, one needs to train to do them in motion. Bypassing an opponent, catching a pass in speed and in the air, are really the key features and increase the attractiveness of the game.

There exist several groups and individuals in the Czech Republic dedicated to the game. Given the relaxed atmosphere that accompanies freebandy, the interest in this new sport has grown. Two make a game, the maximum number of players is not set, and different club affiliations usually enrich both the players and the audience. By the end of the year, there should be an association, a list of major events in the country, and further information. The official portal for the Czech freebandy community is www.freebandy.cz.
